Foodie Friday - We Are What We Eat!!

The phrase ‘‘You are what you eat’’ refers to the notion that to be healthy you need to eat nutritional food. It originally appeared in 1826 when Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, a French lawyer, politician, and famous gastronome, wrote‘‘Dis-moi ce que tu manges, je te dirai ce que tu es’’, which translates to ‘Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are’. The phrase resurfaced in the 1920s when nutritionist Victor Lindlahr used it in association with ‘bad’ food by saying that ‘‘Ninety per cent of the diseases known to man are caused by cheap food stuffs.

You are what you eat, ’’In a literal sense," I believe we all can agree that it's true that 'you are what you eat'. Nutrients from the foods we eat provide the foundation of the structure, function, and wholeness of every little cell in our body, from the skin and hair to the muscles, bones, digestive and immune systems.

Foods we eat can actually release different hormones in our bodies as well. When we eat organic foods we tend to be happier and when we eat protein it is easier to be motivated and concentrated.

There has been studies that show when people eat or drink caffeine that they are easily agitated especially if they already have issues with their tempers. Also, people who eat very spicy food have been proven in a study to be hot headed.

In one study, a set of participants consumed either a plain tortilla chip or a tortilla chip dipped in habanero salsa (one of the hottest chilis in the world). Both sets of participants then read a passage about someone named “Jay,” who behaves in an ambiguously aggressive manner. Participants rated Jay on a variety of dimensions, including aggressiveness, assertiveness, and impulsivity. Participants who had consumed the spicy salsa perceived greater “aggressive” (but not greater “assertive” or “impulsive”) intent in Jay. This result suggests that after consuming spicy food, we are likely to perceive greater aggression in others. The study also confirmed, via a sentence-completion task, that aggression-related words, like “hit” came to mind more easily for participants in the habanero condition than were non-aggression related words like “hat.”

So, let's look at a bible verse that most people are confused about; Mark 7:15 There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.

If you read the whole chapter, you will see that Jesus was talking about the ceremonial rituals of hand washing. The Jews had watched the disciples begin to eat with unwashed hands. The Jews were always going around watching and judging everyone. Sometimes we get into that mode ourselves. That is what we need to be careful of that we are being encouraging to one another and night trying to always find something wrong with eachother in order to make ourselves feel better. Look to Jesus! Let us have a full understanding of His Word by the power of the Holy Spirit and remember we are what we eat!!
